Design considerations for the cabinet of the APF

Jul 04, 2025|

In the field of power quality management, the APF (Active Power Filter) serves as the core equipment for mitigating harmonics and compensating reactive power. The design of its cabinet body directly affects the performance and reliability of the equipment. A high-quality APF active power filter cabinet design needs to take into account multiple factors such as electrical performance, heat dissipation efficiency, and structural strength.

1. Electromagnetic Compatibility Design Specifications

The cabinet of the APF active filter must meet strict EMC requirements: The cabinet should be made of galvanized steel plates with a thickness of 1.5mm or more, ensuring a shielding efficiency of ≥ 60dB; all openings should have a diameter of no more than 5mm to prevent electromagnetic leakage; the signal lines and power lines should be arranged separately, with a spacing of more than 10cm.

2. Optimization Design of Thermal Management System

An efficient heat dissipation system is the key to the reliable operation of the APF active filter: the heat loss of the IGBT module (usually 3-5 kW per cabinet) needs to be calculated, and the air duct design should ensure that the wind speed is ≥ 2 m/s; the surface temperature of the heat sink should be controlled below 65℃; it is recommended to adopt a vertical air duct layout of "bottom-in-top-out".

3. Structural Strength and Seismic Resistance Performance

The cabinet structure of the APF active filter needs to meet the following requirements: The frame is made of 2.0mm thick cold-rolled steel plate, with a load-bearing capacity of ≥ 500kg; The spacing of the reinforcing ribs on the door panel does not exceed 400mm; The seismic design meets the High Performance level requirements of the IEEE 693 standard.

4. Modular Layout and Ergonomics

A reasonable modular design should take into account the following aspects: the partitioned layout of power modules, control units and cooling systems; the width of the maintenance passage should be ≥ 60 cm; the height of the operation interface should be 1.2 - 1.5 m, which is in line with ergonomic principles.

5. Safety Protection and Grounding System

The comprehensive safety design includes: door panel interlock switch (automatic power-off upon opening); emergency stop button (response time < 100ms); multi-point grounding system (grounding resistance < 4Ω).
