Main Sources of Harmonics in Industrial Power Systems

1. Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are one of the most common sources of harmonics in industrial power systems.They are widely used in:

  • Fans;
  • Water pumps;
  • Air compressors;
  • Conveyor systems;
  • Rolling mill drive systems;
  • Textile machinery, etc.

VFDs usually use rectifier and inverter technologies to control motor speed. During the AC-to-DC conversion process, harmonic currents are generated on the AC side of the power supply.With the increasing level of industrial automation, the number of VFD applications continues to grow, making harmonic distortion caused by VFDs an increasingly important power quality issue.

2. Rectifier Equipment

Rectifier equipment converts AC power into DC power and is widely used in modern industrial production.Typical applications include:

  • Aluminum electrolysis;
  • Electroplating production lines;
  • Battery manufacturing equipment;
  • DC drive systems;
  • Large-scale charging equipment.

High-power rectifier systems generate significant characteristic harmonics during operation. To reduce harmonic distortion and improve power quality, harmonic filters or multi-pulse rectification technologies are often applied.

3. Arc Equipment

Arc furnaces and welding equipment are typical nonlinear loads with strong current fluctuations and waveform distortion characteristics.Typical industries include:

  • Steel plants;
  • Foundries;
  • Metal processing industries.

In addition to generating harmonics, arc equipment may also cause:

  • Voltage fluctuations;
  • Flicker effects;
  • Three-phase voltage imbalance.

Therefore, steel and metal processing industries are considered important application areas for power quality improvement solutions.

4. UPS and Electronic Equipment

With the rapid development of data centers, communication systems, and intelligent manufacturing, a large number of UPS systems, power modules, and electronic devices are being widely deployed.Major applications include:

  • Data centers;
  • Bank server rooms;
  • Airport control systems;
  • Communication base stations.

Although the harmonic contribution of a single device may be limited, a large concentration of electronic loads operating simultaneously can create significant harmonic distortion in the power system.

Therefore, facilities equipped with these types of equipment may require harmonic mitigation to ensure reliable and stable power system operation. Tailored power quality solutions should be provided based on the specific load characteristics and harmonic conditions of each facility.
