Does the filter capacitor have the function of reactive power compensation?

Jul 07, 2025|

In the power system, filter capacitors, as the key equipment for mitigating harmonics, their reactive power compensation capability is often overlooked. With the widespread application of nonlinear loads, the function of filter capacitors has increasingly attracted the attention of the engineering community. So, do filter capacitors have the ability to provide reactive power compensation?

I. Working Principle of Filter Capacitor

1. Basic circuit structure

Filter capacitors are usually connected in series with inductors to form an LC filtering circuit, and their impedance characteristics are as follows:

–The impedance is at its lowest at the resonant frequency point.
–Presenting a low-impedance path for specific sub-harmonics
–The fundamental frequency still maintains a capacitive characteristic.

2. Reactive Power Compensation Mechanism

–The filtering capacitor exhibits capacitive impedance at the fundamental frequency.
–Can provide a fixed capacitive reactive power (Qc = 2πfCU²)
–The compensation effect depends on the system voltage and frequency.

II. Analysis of the Reactive Power Compensation Capacity of Filter Capacitors

1. Influencing Factors

–System harmonic content: The greater the harmonic, the smaller the effective compensation capacity.
–Tuning frequency: The closer the tuning point is to the fundamental wave, the more significant the reduction in compensation capability becomes.
–System voltage fluctuation: The compensation capacity is proportional to the square of the voltage.

2. Differences from traditional reactive power compensation capacitors

–The reactance rate of the filter capacitor is usually between 7% and 14%.
–Need to withstand greater harmonic current stress
–A specially designed internal fuse protection system

Filtering capacitors do have the function of reactive power compensation, but this compensatory capacity is significantly influenced by the harmonic conditions of the system. In practical engineering, filtering capacitors should be regarded as special compensation devices with dual functions. They should not only meet the requirements of harmonic control but also make rational use of their reactive power compensation capabilities.
