Why frequent switching of reactive power compensation cabinet

May 14, 2025|

Situation Description

One of the crucial aspects of the reactive power compensation cabinet is the switching operation. The selection of the switching method is of great significance. If the switching method is not chosen correctly, obvious problems such as over-compensation or insufficient compensation will occur. Even if the switching method is correctly selected, if the delay setting is too high, the problems of over-compensation and insufficient compensation may still arise. If the delay setting is too low, frequent switching may cause fluctuations in the power grid, damage the switching switch, and reduce the service life of the capacitors.

The reasons for frequent switching are as follows:
1. There is an anomaly or fault in the automatic reactive power compensation controller itself.
2. The controller's delay debugging is not satisfactory. The delay time has not been set according to actual needs. If the delay time is too short, the switching will be frequent, and the contactor is prone to damage. If the delay time is too long, it will not switch when it should, and not turn on when it should, thus resulting in poor compensation effect.

Solution

Generally speaking, the first reaction of the users is not the problem of the controller. They usually think that the quality of the contactor is not good enough. If only the contactor is replaced and used, it is obviously not able to solve the fundamental problem. After some time, it is found that the contactor is damaged again. If the contactor is damaged due to frequent switching, then only by replacing the contactor can this contactor be used barely.

Due to the two main reasons for frequent switching, a high-quality and highly resistant-to-interference controller must be selected. The selection of reactive power compensation controllers is very important. The switching methods can basically be divided into three types:

dynamic, static, and dynamic-static combination.

The switching method for reactive power compensation should be designed according to the speed of the load. Dynamic and static must be different. Contactors cannot be used dynamically and it is better not to use static castable thyristors. Depending on the compensation needs, it can be compensated together or separately, or even cross-phase compensation of two phases can be used. The usage of this method is also less than that of the industry. Therefore, reactive power compensation at each site can achieve good results.

Jinneng electric standard thyristor switching switch technology originated from Germany. Based on the thorough digestion and absorption of German technology and advanced manufacturing processes, our company has developed a new generation of thyristor switching modules with independent intellectual property rights. The module mainly consists of bidirectional thyristors, trigger circuits, absorption circuits, protection circuits, and intelligent heat sinks. The independent patent technology ensures zero-voltage triggering and zero-current breaking, truly achieving zero inrush current during switching, fast following speed, effective compensation for impact loads, an average response time of less than 15ms, and effectively replacing traditional switching devices.
