Harmonics pose significant hazards to power and electrical equipment
Feb 05, 2026| leading to reduced mechanical efficiency in motors and resulting in energy wastage. Harmonics primarily cause additional heating in motor accessories, making them prone to overvoltage or overcurrent conditions. The generation of harmonics can also cause localized overheating in unevenly wound windings, damaging the insulation layer. This disrupts the normal operation of frequency converters, which are highly susceptible to harmonic distortion and may malfunction erroneously. Harmonics introduce additional losses in power supply lines, cause protective devices to trip incorrectly, and increase copper losses in transformers due to harmonic currents.
Frequency Converters
When the input voltage of a frequency converter becomes distorted, line voltage drops increase. The stray capacitance in motor windings and other factors collectively cause the temperature of transformers to rise. Harmonics may affect switching devices. In power systems, capacitors are often much larger than inductive reactance, leading to overheating of capacitors. However, at higher harmonic frequencies, resonance may occur. Harmonics can also induce resonance between transformer windings and inter-winding capacitance, resulting in abnormal currents flowing into capacitors. This affects the operational performance and service life of frequency converters. Harmonic voltages increase iron losses, impact the measurement accuracy of metering instruments, and the skin effect of conductors on high-frequency harmonic currents increases the equivalent impedance of lines. Motor torque pulsations and noise also increase, placing additional stress on the rectifier diodes and electrolytic capacitors of frequency converters. Inductive reactance multiplies, while capacitive reactance decreases significantly, leading to additional temperature rise in motors.
Power Capacitors
Under power frequency conditions, harmonics can cause capacitors to overheat, generating noise pollution and requiring an increase in the cross-sectional area of output cables.
Power Supply Lines
High-frequency harmonic currents increase line impedance as frequency rises. Since frequency converters are power electronic devices, input current peaks may also increase.
