How to avoid the harm caused by harmonic currents
Jan 19, 2026| When the load consists of harmonic sources such as frequency converters, medium-frequency furnaces, and DC motors, reactive power compensation devices are often burned out. In particular, with the widespread application of frequency converters in the field of motor energy saving, the impact of harmonic currents on reactive power compensation devices has become increasingly prominent. Energy-saving retrofits involve extensive use of frequency converters, which generate severe harmonic currents. These harmonic currents cause varying degrees of damage to the original reactive power compensation devices.
How to avoid the harm caused by harmonic currents?
There are two methods to solve this problem.
One is to modify the reactive power compensation device to an anti-harmonic type. Specifically, this involves connecting a Iron-Core harmonic filter reactors in series with the compensation capacitor so that the resonant frequency of the LC series branch is lower than the lowest possible harmonic frequency.
The other method is to install a active power filter(APF) at the power input terminal of the harmonic source load to filter out the harmonic currents injected into the grid.
