How to prevent the terminals of the filtering reactor from burning out
Aug 12, 2025| Filter reactors are crucial devices in power systems used to suppress harmonics and improve power quality, and they are widely applied in industries, commerce, and new energy sectors. However, terminal burnout of filter reactors is one of the common faults, which may cause equipment damage and system shutdown. To prevent terminal burnout of filter reactors, measures must be taken from multiple aspects such as design, installation, operation, and maintenance.
Ⅰ. Causes of the burnout of the terminals of the filter reactor
The burning of the terminals of the filtering reactor is usually caused by the following reasons:
1. Poor contact: The terminal connections are not secure or the contact surfaces are oxidized, resulting in an increase in contact resistance and overheating.
2. Overcurrent: Excessive harmonic current in the power grid causes the terminals to bear an excessively high current, resulting in overheating.
3. Poor heat dissipation: The surrounding area of the terminals has poor heat dissipation conditions, resulting in the accumulation of heat and overheating.
4. Material defect: The quality of the terminal material is substandard, resulting in insufficient heat resistance and overheating.
II. Methods for Preventing Burnout of Filter Reactor Terminals
1. Optimize terminal design
Material selection: Choose materials with high conductivity and high temperature resistance, such as copper or copper alloys, to ensure the electrical conductivity and heat resistance of the terminals.
Structural Design: Optimize the structure design of the terminals, increase the contact area, and reduce the contact resistance.
2. Ensure a reliable connection
Torque for tightening: Follow the specified tightening torque provided by the manufacturer to ensure a secure connection of the terminals, and prevent poor contact due to looseness.
Clean the contact surfaces: Before installation, clean the contact surfaces of the terminals, remove the oxide layer and dirt, to ensure good electrical contact.
3. Improve heat dissipation conditions
Ventilation design: Design good ventilation conditions around the filtering reactor to ensure air circulation and prevent heat accumulation.
Heat sink: Install a heat sink on the terminals to increase the heat dissipation area and enhance the heat dissipation efficiency.
4. Overcurrent Protection
Fuse: Install a fuse at the input end of the filter inductor to prevent the terminals from burning out due to overcurrent.
Overcurrent protection device: Equipped with an overcurrent protection device, which can monitor the current in real time and immediately cut off the circuit to prevent the terminals from overheating.
