Four operation modes of SVG reactive power compensation device

In the power system, the SVG reactive power compensation device (static reactive power generator) has become a core equipment for improving power quality due to its fast response and precise compensation capabilities. However, in reality, the SVG reactive power compensation device has four different operating modes. What are these four modes exactly?

 

Ⅰ. Constant reactive power compensation mode

The most basic operation mode of the SVG reactive power compensation device is the constant reactive power compensation mode. In this mode, the device outputs a constant amount of reactive power according to the preset value, and is suitable for industrial scenarios with stable load changes. The SVG reactive power compensation device detects the system's reactive power demand in real time, quickly adjusts the conduction angle of the IGBT, and precisely outputs the target reactive power.

II. Constant Voltage Control Mode

In areas with significant voltage fluctuations in the power grid, the SVG reactive power compensation device can adopt a constant voltage control mode. This mode monitors the voltage at the connection point and dynamically adjusts the reactive power output to maintain voltage stability. When the system voltage is lower than the set value, the SVG reactive power compensation device outputs capacitive reactive power to raise the voltage; conversely, it outputs inductive reactive power to lower the voltage.

III. Power Factor Correction Mode

The power factor correction mode of SVG reactive power compensation devices is widely used in industrial and commercial power distribution systems. This mode calculates the system power factor in real time and automatically adjusts the reactive power output to maintain the power factor at the set value (usually between 0.95 and 1.0). Compared with fixed capacitor banks, SVG reactive power compensation devices can achieve continuous and smooth regulation, completely solving the problems of over-compensation or under-compensation in traditional compensation methods.

IV. Hybrid Mode of Harmonic Compensation and Reactive Power Compensation

The advanced SVG reactive power compensation device also features a hybrid operation mode of harmonic compensation and reactive power compensation. In this mode, the device not only provides reactive power compensation but can also simultaneously filter out specific frequency harmonic currents. By adopting multiple PWM control technology and advanced filtering algorithms, modern SVG reactive power compensation devices can achieve a harmonic distortion rate (THD) of less than 30% and a reactive power compensation efficiency of over 95%.
