How to detect the breakdown of resonant capacitors
Sep 18, 2025| Resonant capacitors play a crucial role in power electronic devices and communication systems, mainly serving functions such as filtering, tuning, and energy storage. However, due to complex working environments or quality issues, resonant capacitors may experience breakdown failures. Breakdown not only leads to a decline in equipment performance but also may cause serious safety accidents.
I. Causes of Breakdown of Resonant Capacitors
The breakdown of resonant capacitors is usually caused by the following reasons:
1. Overvoltage: When the operating voltage exceeds the rated voltage of the resonant capacitor, it may cause the insulation layer to break down.
2. Excessive temperature: Operating for a long time at high temperatures will accelerate the aging of insulating materials and reduce their voltage resistance capacity.
3. Manufacturing defects: There are bubbles, impurities or uneven electrodes inside the capacitor, which may cause local concentration of electric field and lead to breakdown.
4. Mechanical damage: During transportation or installation, if the capacitor is subjected to external force impact, it may cause damage to its internal structure.
II. Detection Method for Breakdown of Resonant Capacitors
When a resonant capacitor is broken down, its electrical performance will undergo significant changes. Here are several commonly used detection methods:
Visual inspection
By visually inspecting the appearance of the resonant capacitor, obvious breakdown marks can be observed, such as:
1. Shell deformation or bulging: Breakdown may cause an increase in internal pressure, leading to shell deformation.
2. Charred marks: During the breakdown process, high temperatures may be generated, leaving charred marks on the casing.
3. Leakage phenomenon: Certain types of resonant capacitors may experience electrolyte leakage after breakdown.
