The purpose and principle of the reactive power compensation controller

Sep 18, 2025|

The balance of reactive power is one of the key factors for ensuring the stable operation of the power grid and the quality of electrical energy. The reactive power compensation controller, as the core device of the reactive power compensation system, effectively improves the power factor, reduces line losses, and enhances voltage quality by monitoring and controlling the flow of reactive power in real time.

I. The Function of the Reactive Power Compensation Controller

1. Improve power factor

The reactive power compensation controller detects the reactive power demand in the power grid in real time and automatically switches on or off capacitor banks or other reactive power compensation equipment, thereby reducing the flow of reactive power and improving the power factor of the system.

2. Reduce line losses

The flow of reactive power in transmission lines will increase the current of the lines, thereby causing additional energy loss. The reactive power compensation controller effectively reduces line losses and improves power transmission efficiency by optimizing the distribution of reactive power.

3. Improve voltage quality

The imbalance of reactive power can cause voltage fluctuations in the power grid, affecting the normal operation of electrical equipment. The reactive power compensation controller stabilizes the grid voltage and improves the power quality by dynamically adjusting the reactive power compensation equipment.

4. Extend the lifespan of the equipment

By reducing the flow of reactive power, the reactive power compensation controller can lower the load on electrical equipment, reduce the heat generation and losses of the equipment, and thereby extend the service life of the equipment.

5. Support the integration of new energy sources

In new energy power generation systems, such as wind power and solar power generation, the fluctuation of reactive power is significant. The reactive power compensation controller can respond quickly to changes in reactive power and support the stable grid connection of new energy.

II. Working Principle of the Reactive Power Compensation Controller

1. Data collection

The reactive power compensation controller acquires real-time data such as voltage, current and power factor of the power grid through voltage transformer (PT) and current transformer (CT). These data form the basis for the controller's decision-making.

2. Calculation of Reactive Power

The controller calculates the reactive power demand in the power grid based on the collected voltage and current data. Usually, the controller employs advanced algorithms, such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), to analyze the power grid signals and accurately identify the magnitude and direction of the reactive power.
