Operating characteristics of SVG static reactive power compensator

Jul 02, 2025|

The SVG static var compensator is an advanced reactive power compensation device based on power electronics technology. It has the capabilities of rapid, flexible and high-precision regulation, and is an important means in modern power systems for maintaining voltage stability, improving power factor and suppressing voltage fluctuations. The SVG static var compensator, with its high response speed, stable output and intelligent control capability, has become a key equipment for constructing a flexible, efficient and safe power grid structure.

Compared with traditional capacitor banks and SVC (Static Var Compensator), the SVG (Static Var Compensator) has a faster response speed and better output linearity, and can quickly adjust the reactive power within milliseconds. It is particularly suitable for scenarios with high requirements for voltage stability and frequent grid disturbances.

During operation, the SVG static var compensator achieves bidirectional and continuous regulation of reactive power in both capacitive and inductive modes by controlling the direction and magnitude of the output current of the inverter. Its most significant advantage lies in the fact that it can maintain the rated reactive power output even when the system voltage is low, without being affected by the voltage level. Additionally, SVG can also compensate for three-phase unbalanced currents and provide a certain degree of harmonic suppression, effectively improving the power quality.

From the perspective of engineering application, when the capacity of the SVG static reactive power compensator accounts for about 3% of the system's short-circuit capacity, it can significantly enhance the voltage support capability and reactive power regulation flexibility of the system, meeting the core requirements of the power system for dynamic reactive power support. This density configuration is particularly important in high-load fluctuation scenarios (such as metallurgy, rail transit, wind-solar-storage integration, etc.), and can effectively prevent problems such as voltage flicker and voltage collapse.
