The fundamental difference between three-phase and single-phase reactive power compensation controllers

Aug 06, 2025|

The main function of the low-voltage reactive power compensation controller is to enhance the power factor of the power system, reduce power loss, and improve the quality of electrical energy. However, when faced with three-phase and single-phase reactive power compensation controllers available in the market, many users are unable to distinguish which one to use. So, what is the essential difference between three-phase and single-phase reactive power compensation controllers?

The reactive power compensation controller, as the core device for reactive power regulation in the power system, has fundamental differences in design between its three-phase and single-phase versions:

Ⅰ. Differences in Hardware Structure

1. Sampling channels: The three-phase controller comes with 3 voltage + 3 current sampling channels as standard. For single-phase, only 1 + 1 is required.
2. Processor Architecture: The three-phase controller must support multi-channel synchronous sampling and has higher processing requirements.
3. Output Circuit: Three-phase controllers typically offer 6 to 12 output channels, while single-phase controllers only require 2 to 4 channels.

II. Different Algorithm Principles

1. Three-phase system: Calculations are performed using dq transformation or instantaneous reactive power theory.
2. Single-phase system: Achieved through phase-shifting method or single-phase PQ theory
3. Harmonic processing: In a three-phase system, each sequence component can be analyzed, while in a single-phase system, only the total harmonic can be detected.

III. Standard and Specification Requirements

1. Industrial standard: GB/T 15576 stipulates that three-phase and single-phase controllers must undergo separate certifications.
2. Safety standards: Different requirements for insulation level and electrical clearance
3. EMC Testing: Requirements for anti-interference of three-phase equipment are more stringent.
