The maximum voltage that a cylindrical capacitor can withstand

Aug 25, 2025|

BSMJ series cylindrical self-healing low voltage parallel capacitors are usually composed of two conductors (electrodes) and an insulating material (dielectric). The external electrodes are cylindrical and wrapped around the internal electrodes, while the insulating material is placed between them. Their structure is simple yet powerful, which makes cylindrical capacitors widely used in various fields such as power filtering, signal coupling, and energy storage.

In electrical engineering and electronic equipment design, capacitors are a crucial component as they are responsible for storing and releasing electrical energy. Particularly, cylindrical capacitors, due to their structural characteristics and wide range of applications, have become the preferred choice in many high-voltage devices. However, what is the maximum voltage that cylindrical capacitors can withstand?

Ⅰ. Low-voltage capacitors (LV, ≤ 1000V)

1. Typical voltage ranges: 250V, 400V, 450V, 525V, 690V, 900V, etc.

2. Applied to low-voltage power distribution systems, reactive power compensation, harmonic filtering, etc.

II. Medium Voltage Capacitors (MV, 1kV - 35kV)

1. Typical voltage ranges: 1.14kV, 3.15kV, 6.3kV, 10.5kV, 24kV, etc.

2. Applicable to medium-voltage power distribution systems, such as substations and factory power supply networks.

III. High Voltage Capacitor (HV, 35kV)

1. Typical voltage ranges: 35kV, 66kV, 110kV, 220kV, 330kV, etc.

2. Primarily used in high-voltage power transmission lines and for regulating the stability of the power system.

IV. Factors Affecting Pressure Resistance:

1. Medium material: Different materials such as polypropylene film, aluminum electrolysis, and ceramics determine the pressure resistance capacity.

2. Structural Design: Factors such as dry type, oil-immersed type, and gas-filled type (SF6) affect the withstand voltage level.

3. Working environment: External factors such as temperature, humidity and altitude can affect the withstand voltage capacity of capacitors.
