How to measure the magnitude of the current of the power compensation capacitor

In modern industrial and commercial power supply systems, power compensation capacitors are not only used to improve power factor and reduce reactive power, but also can effectively save energy costs. However, in the power system, merely installing capacitors is not sufficient; accurately measuring the size of the current is also a crucial step to ensure the normal and safe operation of the system.

 

Measuring the current of the power compensation capacitor usually requires the use of appropriate instruments and methods to ensure measurement accuracy. Here are several common measurement methods:

Ⅰ. Using a Clamp Meter

A clamp-on ammeter is a commonly used tool for measuring current, and it is suitable for measuring the current of power compensation capacitors. It detects the current passing through the conductor by clamping the wire.

II. Using Power Meter

If you wish to obtain more comprehensive electrical parameters of the power compensation capacitor (such as current, voltage, power factor, etc.), a power analyzer can be used for measurement. The power analyzer can provide real-time waveforms of current and voltage, phase difference, and other related electrical parameters.

III. Utilization of Current Transformers (CT)

A current transformer (CT) is a device that converts high current into low current. It can be used in conjunction with an ammeter or a power analyzer to indirectly measure the current of a capacitor.

Ⅳ. Direct Measurement (via Ammeter)

If conditions permit and the current is not too high, a direct-insertion type ammeter can be used for measurement. This method is applicable to the current of low-power capacitors.
