Three-phase four-wire APF Active Power Filter Introduction
Aug 19, 2025| In the power distribution system, the three-phase four-wire system APF (Active Power Filter) is gaining popularity as a key equipment for addressing power quality issues due to its outstanding harmonic control capabilities. In the following section, we will provide an overview of the specific features of the three-phase four-wire system APF active power filter.
Ⅰ. Special Topological Structure Design
The three-phase four-wire APF adopts a four-arm converter structure, with the fourth arm specifically handling the neutral current. This design can simultaneously compensate for three-phase harmonics and zero-sequence components. Topologically, it has 50% more switching devices than a three-arm design and can precisely control the neutral current. The unique DC-side capacitor voltage division technology ensures balanced voltages across each arm and avoids overvoltage damage.
II. Advantages of Zero Sequence Harmonic Mitigation
The traditional three-phase three-wire APF is unable to handle zero-sequence harmonics. However, the four-wire version can eliminate third and all its multiple harmonics by adding a neutral line connection. Its zero-sequence compensation capability reaches 120% of that of the phase line compensation. It is particularly suitable for load scenarios such as LED lighting and UPS that generate a large amount of zero-sequence harmonics. After treatment, the neutral line current can be reduced by more than 70%.
III. Breakthroughs in Intelligent Control Algorithms
An improved IP-IQ algorithm based on instantaneous reactive power theory is adopted, combined with FFT rapid harmonic detection. The response time is shortened to within 5ms. The adaptive fuzzy PID control strategy can dynamically adjust the compensation parameters, maintaining a compensation accuracy of over 95% even during load sudden changes. The built-in resonance suppression algorithm can prevent harmonic amplification caused by system impedance.
IV. Modular Expansion Solution
The power unit adopts a drawer-type module design, with each module having a capacity ranging from 25A to 100A. It supports N+1 redundant parallel operation and realizes current equalization control between modules through the CAN bus. The system can be expanded up to a maximum of 1200A. This design not only facilitates future expansion but also enhances system reliability. A single module failure will not affect the overall operation.
V. Multiple Protection Mechanisms
Configure three-level security protection: The IGBT overcurrent protection response time is less than 2 μs, the DC bus overvoltage protection threshold is adjustable, and the cooling system adopts a dual-fan redundant design. The unique leakage current monitoring function can detect insulation deterioration in real time and prevent electric shock accidents. All protection circuits have passed SIL2 safety certification.
VI. Typical Application Scenarios
When dealing with the harmonic emissions of medical equipment in medical buildings, the THDv can be kept below 3%. In data center scenarios, the 6k±1 harmonic generated by UPS can be eliminated. In commercial complexes, the neutral line current can be controlled within 15% of the phase current. When used in conjunction with photovoltaic inverters, it can suppress the harmonic injection at the grid connection point.
